Zurich Smartphone Study

Impact of smartphone use on sensory processing in the brain

Arko Ghosh, Institute of Neuroinformatics, ETH and University of Zürich, Winterthurerstr. 190, CH-8057 Zürich

Participants wanted for scientific study:
For a scientific investigation on how phone use affects brain functions, we are seeking to recruit healthy right-handed men and women aged between 18 and 60, who are German, English or French native speakers or who possess a good command of any of the three languages. We would like to recruit people who have a smartphone running Android.

Aim of the study:

We would like to know how the repeated swipes and taps on the touchscreen influence those areas of the brain that are involved in processing the sense of touch from the fingertips.

Study schedule and duration:

This study will involve two appointments at the University of Zürich (Irchel campus). During the first appointment lasting only 15 minutes we shall install an app on your phone and then show you how it records your touchscreen behaviour. In the second appointment after a gap of 20-60 days you shall fill a first survey about your smartphone use, then another short survey to confirm your handedness, we shall download the data generated by the app and also measure your brain activity. The entire duration of this appointment is 3 hours – from the time you step in to the time you step out.

Remuneration (including travel expenses):

You will receive 25 CHF per hour for the brain activity measurement (usually lasting 2.5 to 3 hours), as well as small snacks and drinks during this appointment.

All data shall be anonymized and treated confidentially. You should not expect any medical benefit.

If you are interested in taking part in the study and fulfil the above-mentioned criteria, please contact: Arko Ghosh, Institute of Neuroinformatics, ETH and University of Zürich, Winterthurerstr. 190, CH-8057 Zürich, phone: +41 44 635 30 52 (between 9am and 6pm); email: arko@ini.uzh.ch
Please note that your details may be recorded when we consider you for the study. However if we cannot gain an experimental slot or if you decide you are not interested in the study, we shall delete your information immediately.

For further information please also do not hesitate to contact Arko Ghosh (same contact as above).
